We all have those days where we wake up after a night of festivities when you feel bloated and have no need to eat. This smoothie is something that can help with that. I also recommend it as a pre-workout if, like me, you prefer to workout just after waking up and need a little fuel to help you through. The start ingrediënt of this soothie is Kefir. For those of you who don’t know it, think of it as a supercharged yogurt. It contains a lot of gut-healthy bacteria making it a very potent probiotic that is far more effective than yogurt or those sugar loaded probiotic morning drinks. It’s slightly tart is flavour but I don’t really mind the taste. I recently discovered that a supermarket here in Belgium carries kefir which made me as happy as a clam. At one time I even tried making my own kefir using coconut milk, but that didn’t last long. Flaxseeds mixed with kefir is like a super combo. The flaxseed moves things along so that the kefir can plant some good bacteria.
- 250 ml of milk kefir
- 1 teaspoon of flaxseed. You can build up to 1 tablespoon over time.
- 1 portion fruit of your choice. I used kiwi in this
- ¼ cup Oatmeal
- Additionally: honey or maple syrup to sweeten things up. Ice cubes if you like it cold
Mise en place*
- Cut the pieces of fruit.
Where the magic happens
- Blend all ingredients and add sweetener or ice cubes if you wish.
- Enjoy your happy, healthy gut.
*Mise en place is a term used in cooking which when translated means “putting in place.” These are all the preparations that are done before cooking can take place. I put this in a different section because not only will it save you time and stress, but it helps in decreasing mistakes during cooking.
